Fake online MBAs are everywhere: 7 red flags and a 2-minute verification

Online education is booming — and so are fake "university" websites and agents selling worthless degrees. The good news: verification takes two minutes and is completely free.

The 7 red flags

• Not on the UGC list. Only universities entitled by UGC's distance & online bureau can legally offer online degrees in India. Check the official entitlement list on ugc.gov.in before anything else.
• Guaranteed admission or placement. No legitimate university guarantees either. "100% placement assured" is marketing at best, fraud at worst.
• Discounts that expire tonight. Pressure deadlines like "50% off if you pay in 2 hours" exist to stop you from verifying.
• Payment to a personal account or UPI ID. Fees go only to the university's official admission portal — never to an individual, agent, or shared QR code.
• Chat-only counsellors. Real admission teams take video calls from official domains and have verifiable identities.
• Lookalike websites. Scammers clone university sites with misspelled domains. Type the university's address yourself; never trust a link sent over chat.
• A degree with no exams. UGC-entitled online degrees require proctored exams. "No exams needed" means a worthless certificate.

The 2-minute verification routine

• Search the university on the UGC entitled-online-programs list.
• Confirm its NAAC grade on the university's own official website.
• Call the admissions number published on that official website — not the one an agent gave you.
• Pay only through the official portal and keep the receipt.

How we handle this

Every university on UniVerity.in carries its accreditation, NIRF reference and a "verified" stamp showing when our team last checked its data. Compare them on UniVerity.in — and when in doubt, ask our counsellors to verify a university with you, free.
